The full horror reveals itself piece by piece.

Having discovered the problem (or so I thought) it was back inside the caravan to find out the extent of the damage. I removed the cushions and seat area back to the framework and started poking around. I very quickly found that what I thought had been solid was not. The rot was extensive and the more I prodded the more I discovered.

Inside left, damp is revealed

Stripping back teh rotting wood

I have seen enough to get an idea what I am going to need to put it back together so I make a trip to my nearest-ish caravan dealer and had a chat about sealants etc. I bought an 8x4 sheet of 3.2mm ply, vinyl coated with a wood effect. I also bought 4 tubes of Geobond sealant adhesive and 4 tubes of seamseal CV non-drying bedding sealant. In addition I have 4 tubes of Sikaflex-512 that I had purchased earlier on thinking that was all I was going to need. Screwfix are sending me a pack of stainless steel screws and 4 tubes of solvent-free "I cant believe its not nails" or some other no-nails gunk! This I believe is what glues the ply to the polystyrene panels. (Had a laugh at the Evo-stick variant called " Sticks like s*it" ). Ronseal Clear Wood Preserver and Ronseal Wood Hardener. White Spirit, Turps, and IPA for cleaning old mastic.

Cleaned up

The picture above shows how far I have got to stripping this damp out. The whole timber under the window is gone as is a portion of the window frame, about 6 inches of it.

close up

For some reason some of my pictures havent transferred from the camera to the PC. The timber that runs up the corner of the caravan is also rotten. Somehow I am going to have to find a way to access that corner. It isn't immediately obvious how that front wooden panel comes out. Lets look at the other side now.
