Bits and pieces...nearly there.

I spent the whole of Saturday doing two things. First one was the long journey to my local caravan dealers shop to pick up more Seamseal mastic. The weather is so hot here that I had my Air Conditioning on in the car, and it is only April! When I got back I settled in to the boring task of scrubbing off all the glue left when you peel the duct tape off. When it has been on for more than a few days the glue hardens and you cant simply strip the tape back off. What happens is that the plastic outer layer peels away and leaves the stringy stuff and the hard glue behind. What I used was "Contractors solvent" from Screwfix. It is in a handy spray bottle and pretty well makes a really hard task just ...well...hard. It is still a monotonous job though. Has to be done, so nothing for it but to get on with it. After I did that I wash all the seams in preparation for sealing tomorrow. I used Methylated spirits for this job to leave the surfaces nice and clean.

Sunday then. It is scorching hot here and the sun is blazing down. Looking at the van I can see that it is time to fix on the new running lights that I have for the front of the van. They are a different shape to the old ones so I want to clean up the old marks that were left from the old lights so they dont show when I put on the new, narrower, ones. I tried everything...all the solvents I had, soap, everything. I finally gave up and resigned myself to the fact that they were there to stay.

I marked off the area where the screws should go and had to adjust it a little. So I used a pencil eraser to remove the lines and I noticed that the dirty marks went too.

Happy days. The black mark towards the lower right corner is actually a hole in the aluminium. I will deal with it in a minute along with this lot!

Aluminium rot.

I mixed some catalloy body filler that I got from Halfords and spread it in to the holes. Don't put too much on as it has to be sanded smooth. To finish off I will run a length or two of coach liner along it which will keep the water out and hide the marks. It's all that I can do at this time. Eventually I will try and get the hold of a strip of aluminium and bond it on top of this lot. But thats for the future.

The main job today is to get all the seams sealed with Geobond. It is a bonding sealant like Sikaflex. I pipe a thin line along each seam until they are all comlpletely sealed in. Tomorrow when the Geobond has cured I can put the trims back on with Seamseal CV mastic. Anyway, when I am done the job looks like this:

Now I can get on with some other bits and bobs to get ready for tomorrow.
