Turning the corner?

There is still no obvious way to remove the front panel that is underneath the front window on the inside of the caravan. Never one to shrink from a challenge I am more certain than ever that I need to strip the front off the van to get at the damaged areas. Another sunny day and slightly less wind blowing from the North so I get to work and strip off the trim on the other side of the caravan.

After stripping out the plastic beading I start to remove the screws that holds the trim in place. I come across some badly rusted ones that I cant turn. Now, I know that the accepted wisdom is that you have to drill these out, but it takes forever on these screws..I had one or two to do on the other side! I am going to show you my way of removing them.

Obviously if you have never used a grinder then please stick to drilling them out. The other point worth noting that this a 1mm disk on the grinder.

Rusty screw head

Lay the grinder blade across the centre of the screw head

Cutting a groove

Dont use a lot of force, all you want to do is cut a little groove. If the screw is really bound in that hole you need somewhere to stick the drill!

Notch cut in screw

Even though I have made the cut a little off-centre, the screw still turns easily enough with a slot head screwdriver.

Removing the screw.

This method wont be everyones cup of tea, but I had ten or so screws to do and managed them all in about 5 minutes. Gently does it is the best way to go with this.

A quick clean up to remove the old mastic...actually this took a while as it was a mix of old dry mastic and fresh gunk. Not sure what has been going on in this vans past life, but no-one with any ability has been near it for sure!
All I have to do now is remove the screws that hold the front fibre glass panel onto the caravan and pop it off. Ha ha sounds easy. Actually, it was quite easy, I just have to hope that it goes on as easily!
